Who Will Win the PSL 2023?
We are so excited that the Pakistan Super League is back – starting on 13th February at the Multan Cricket Stadium, Multan. The season kicked off with a nail-biting cracker between the top two teams last season, the Lahore Qalandars versus the Multan Sultans.
But who will do it this year? Well, there’s a lot to consider, but it seems that the Multan Sultans have a lot going for them in 2023. They are being led by their wicket-keeper batsman, Mohammad Rizwan, who will want to build on last year’s performance. They were the top team coming out of the league stage, with 9 wins from 10 matches.
However, the squad looks even better this year, having added Josh Little, David Miller, Kieron Pollard, Wayne Parnell and Akeal Hosein to the lineup. As such, you can expect them to be named as one of the favourites in the top PSL online cricket betting sites.
The PSL 2023 Underdogs
You never know, sometimes it’s worth a punt on the underdogs – and this season we have the underdogs down as being Peshawar Zalmi, led by Babar Azam. There’s not much Babar doesn’t know about T20 cricket – and he has a top-quality team behind him… so he could potentially create something good with the help of newcomers Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Rovman Powell.
We also have Mohammad Haris who played 5 games last season, scoring 166 runs with an impressive 186.51 strike rate. He will no doubt prove to be a vital addition to the Zalmi side. Last season, the leading wicket-taker was Salman Irshad, who took 15 wickets – and hopefully, he will give a repeat performance this year.
PSL Prediction – The Teams
This season, there will be 6 teams taking part, teams which have been part of the tournament since its inception back in 2016. The only exception being the Multan Sultans that joined later on in 2017. These are the six teams taking part in this season’s action:
- Islamabad United
- Karachi Kings
- Lahore Qalandars
- Multan Sultans
- Peshawar Zalmi
- Quetta Gladiators
The PSL League Format
As is common with T20 leagues, the Pakistan Super League is played in a double round robin followed by playoffs format. Each of the teams will face the other teams twice during the round-robin league stage, meaning there are 30 matches in this part of the tournament.
When this comes to an end, the top 4 teams will reach the playoffs. This will consist of four matches:
- 2 eliminators
- 1 qualifier
- The Final
The two top-ranking teams will face off in the qualifier match and the winner will get a place in the finals automatically. The teams that ranked 3rd and 4th will compete in the first eliminator. Whichever team wins this will take on the team that lost the qualifier for the 2nd eliminator.
The winner of that match will take on the winner of the qualifier in the grand finale. The winner will be crowned the PSL Champion.
Pakistani Super League Venues
The PSL will consist of 34 matches in total, which will be played across 4 venues in:
- Karachi
- Lahore
- Multan
- Rawalpindi
However, this can change from season to season, with the 2022 tournament only being played in 2 different venues.
Venue | Opened | Capacity |
---|---|---|
National Stadium, Karachi | 1955 | 34,000 |
Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore | 1959 | 27,000 |
Multan Cricket Stadium, Multan | 2001 | 30,000 |

- Star Players: Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Rashid Khan and Sikandar Raza
- Last Season Result: Winner
It couldn’t have gone any better for the squad last year, who walked away with their very first PSL title. They are in with a pretty strong chance this season as well, as the team is very strong. In the last season, they qualified for the playoffs in 2nd spot, with 6 wins from 10 matches, but smashed the playoffs.
Their leading run scorer last year was Fakhar Zaman, with the captain, Shaheen Afridi, coming in as the highest wicket-taker. They will be joined this year by the English batsman, Harry Brook and the Zimbabwean all-rounder Sikandar Raza. Both had excellent T20 form in 2022, so will look to have an impact this year. Multan Sultans (MS)
- Captained By: Mohammad Rizwan
- Star Players: Akeal Hosein, David Miller, Shahnawaz Dahani and Shan Masood
- Last Season Result: 2nd
Although they didn’t win last year, they were undeniably the strongest team, finishing the league stage with 9 wins from their 10 matches. Everyone thought they would be walking away with the title but Lahore Qalandars had other ideas.
In terms of the batting team, Shan Masood and captain Mohammad Rizwan will be joining forces again. Last season Rizwan managed to hit 546 runs with an impressive 68.25 average. Tim David was also pretty wild with his 278 runs at a 194.40 strike rate. He also smashed 21 sixes, the most in the season. This year, their batting lineup will be levelled up even more with the addition of the Proteas power hitter David Miller and Kieron Pollard, the West Indies all-rounder.
In terms of bowling, the Sultans will certainly feel the loss of Imran Tahir. Shahnawaz Dahani will have the support of overseas bowlers such as Akeal Hosein, Wayne Parnell and Josh Little. Then we have the great all-rounder, Khushdil Shah, who took 16 wickets last season and is also pretty mean with the bat as well.

He will be joined by overseas batters including Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutheford and Tom Kohler-Cadmore. The batting lineup will also be strengthened by the presence of Mohammad Haris.
In terms of bowling, the Peshawar team looks strong, with names such as Mujeeb ur Rahman, Jimmy Neesham, Richard Gleeson and Salman Irshad who was the top wicket-taker with 15 wickets out of 8 matches.

Sarfaraz Ahmed hit a century in Tests and will come into the new season with renewed confidence. The batting team will be joined by power hitter, Iftikhar Ahmed, which will do them a great favour given his current form.
In terms of the bowling team, they have signed Naseem Shah, the new Pakistan superstar, who earned international recognition during the Asia Cup 2022. He was the top wicket-taker last season, taking 14 wickets from 10 matches. Meanwhile, they have Odean Smith, Naveen ul Haq and Dwaine Pretorius as overseas pacers, all high-quality T20 cricketers.

About the PSL
The PSL is the Pakistan Super League, the top T20 league in Pakistan. This year it is back for its 8th instalment, which was all set to start on 13the February 2023 with a battle between last year’s two top teams, the Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars.
Last season, led by skipper Shaheen Afridi, the Qalandars took home their first-ever PSL championship… which means that now, all teams have lifted the PSL trophy at least once.
The PSL 8 draft was held in December 2022 – and it brought many changes to the teams. One of the biggest changes was the move from Karachi Kings to Peshawar Zalmi by the Pakistan skipper Babar Azam. Kings suffered last season, with only 1 win from their 10 league games – but are hoping for better this season with the help from new signings Shoaib Malik and Haider Ali.
